My work is inspired by the experience of ‘being out there’. Drawn to wild places, living in northern hills, walking / painting expeditions to remote highland and island areas - these are the places of my drawings and paintings.

I need to be there, drawing and painting outdoors, braving the elements - working ‘on the spot’, out on the edge, next to storm tossed waves, on top of vertiginous cliffs or mountain ridge. Here I love to watch the weather move and change and with the immediacy of acrylics and pastels, I respond rapidly to the thrill of a storm, the rage of the sea and wind or flight of sea bird winging past.

Back in the studio, paintings evolve from a combination of my memories, feelings and handling of materials-oil paint, acrylics. My intention, - to convey the raw energy and mood of place experienced by ‘being there’. The challenge – to work with the same spontaneous and uninhibited approach as when working outdoors.
